Dear Colleagues,

Please spread the word as appropriate:

http://dk-galizien.univie.ac.at/

The doctoral program (DK) „Austrian Galicia and Its Multicultural Heritage“ advertises the
following vacant positions at the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, the Faculty of
Historical and Cultural Studies and the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Vienna
(subject to further financial support by the Austrian Science Fund):
10 international doctoral fellowships starting with 1 March 2013 and running for three
years.
The doctoral students are expected to write their theses at the University of Vienna, at the
Departments of German, Jewish, Slavonic (Polish, Ukrainian) Studies, History or Political
Science, and with a clear reference to Galicia.
Potential dissertation topics might for example deal with:
- Political, religious, cultural, economic or social history of Austrian Galicia and/or its
remembrance
- Migration and transformation history in Habsburg and post-Habsburg Galicia
- Trans-religious and interdenominational patterns of communication in Galicia
- Jewish history, tradition and literature in Galicia
- Politics of history and struggle for political identity within transformation after 1918/1989
- German-language literature in and about Galicia and its afterlife in the present
- Interconnection between Polish, Ukrainian, and German texts in Galicia
- Ukrainian literature in the context of the Central European literary process
We will particularly consider transdisciplinary and trancultural proposals. We expect a
permanent presence in Vienna and the willingness to actively participate in the DK program.
For further information see the DK website: http://dk-galizien.univie.ac.at/
Admission to the DK premises a MA in one of the disciplines mentioned above or in a similar
field of study at a national or international university. Beside proficiency in German and
English the knowledge of another (historical) language of Galicia (Polish, Ukrainian, Yiddish,
Hebrew) is advantageous.
Moreover, the DK advertises five positions for external fellows. Doctoral students writing a
pertinent dissertation can participate in the DK program and get financial support for travel,
attending conferences and so on, but do not get a working contract with the university.
Applications including a CV, graduation certificate copies, a five-page research proposal
(approx. 10,000 characters) of the dissertation project and a recommendation letter from a
university professor should be sent to the DK coordinator, Dr. Ljiljana Radonic
(ljiljana.radonic at univie.ac.at) until 15 December 2012.

Best wishes,

Vitaly Chernetsky
