Individual Advanced Research Opportunities Program for Field Research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia

The Individual Advanced Research Opportunities Program (IARO) provides scholars and professionals with long-term support to perform policy-relevant research in the countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

IARO provides research support in up to three countries for a minimum of two months and a maximum of nine months. Participants are provided with visa assistance, international round-trip transportation, a monthly allowance for housing and living expenses, as well as emergency evacuation insurance. IARO fellows also have access to resources available in any of IREX's field offices.

Eligibility

Must be U.S. citizen
Must be enrolled in a graduate degree program or currently be holding a graduate degree at the time of application.

Eligible Countries of Research
Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan

GRANT CATEGORIES

Grants will be awarded in each of the four categories:


Master’s Student IARO
Eligibility: Must be enrolled in a Master’s program during the grant period
Grant Duration: one to three months

Predoctoral Student IARO
Eligibility: Must be enrolled in a PhD program during the grant period
Grant Duration: two to nine months*

Professional IARO
Eligibility: Must have one of the following degrees (MA, MS, MFA, MBA, MPA, MLIS, MPH, JD, MD, PhD) and must not be enrolled as a student during the grant period.
Grant Duration: two to nine months*

Postdoctoral Scholar IARO
Eligibility: Must hold a PhD by the application deadline
Grant Duration: two to nine months*

*Note: the average grant duration is six months but fellowships for up to nine months may be considered contingent upon the availability of funding
