Meet Olena Hankivsky, Professor in the School of Public Policy at Simon Fraser University, at the presentation of Gender, Politics, and Society in Ukraine, which was co-edited by Anastasia Salnykova, PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia.
Gender, Politics, and Society in Ukraine is the first collection to examine how political, social, and economic transitions in post-Communist Ukraine are transforming gender roles and relations within the country. Leading Western and Ukrainian scholars and practitioners address a wide range of effects associated with and reinforced by these transitions – including the breakdown of the general welfare system, the lack of progress in the development of the healthcare system, gender inequality in political representation, the patriarchal nature of nation building, human trafficking, domestic violence, changing conceptions of fatherhood and masculinity, homelessness, and LGBT issues – from a variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives.
The evening is being co-sponsored by the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations and the Ukrainian National Women's League of America.
Copies of the book will be available for sale during the launch, and the author will be on hand to sign books.
Dr. Olena Hankivsky is a Professor in the Public Policy Program and Director of the Institute Intersectionality Research and Policy at SFU. She is also a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) Senior Scholar in Population Health and a CIHR-IGH Mid-Career Research Chair in New Perspectives on Sex/Gender, Diversity, and Health Reform. Olena specializes in public policy and political theory and has a particular interest in gender and health policy.
