*History 312 Foundations** of East European History*
The course examines how the concept of Eastern and Western Europe arose in
discussions of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. Concentrating
on the divisions of civilizations on the borderland between the Eurasian
steppe and the agrarian societies at its edges, the course explores the
religious, political, social, and economic factors that distinguished the
lands of Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine from territories to the
west, east, and south. The influence of the Latin West and the Byzantine
East on the cultures of these lands is examined. Special attention is paid
to the diversity of these territories with vibrant Jewish, Armenian, and
other minority communities as well as to contacts with the Muslim and
Turkic worlds. The course focuses on the rise of the Ukrainian Cossacks and
the great revolt against the Polish-Lithuanian state led by Bohdan
Khmelnytsky and the rise and transformation of Muscovy/Russia. The course
seeks to acquaint students with major historical discussions (e.g the
Crisis of the Seventeenth Century, the rise of world economies, the causes
and nature of revolts/revolutions). Considerable attention in class and
assignments is paid to primary sources.
