Some good intentions spoiled by unintentional innuendo.
I replied:
Dear Jennifer,
When you write "Ukrainian Partisans Army, a nationalist group with a spotty history who became involved on both sides of WWII", I wonder if you can back this with facts. Having already referred to the morph-ability of language "One of the fundamental principles of any language is that the connection between a symbol and its meaning is constantly in flux and may change or evolve as dictated by culture and circumstance.", it appears that you are applying the same malleability to history. The UPA was not allied with either side during the war. The political OUN tried to present Herr Adolph with a fait accompli by declaring the renewal of Ukrainian independence in a courtship attempt that lasted exactly one week. The UPA was formed a year later. The war in Western Ukraine was actually a four-sided war among Poles Ukrainians, Germans and Muscovites, with each against all others, the dynamics of that conflict being far more intricate than the oversimplified Nazi-Bolshevik bipolarity. I dare say that there was nothing in the history of the liberation struggle of the UPA that any Ukrainian could be ashamed of.
What does deserve opprobrium is the actions of those Ukrainians that having witnessed the genocide of their nation in the Moscow orchestrated Holodomor still fought in Stalin's Red Army.
