[Aaus-list] regarding conference at the New School

Шановні колеги!

I write regarding Dr. Chernetsky's message about the upcoming conference
at the New School for Social Research, "Grounding Theoretical
Reflections in Politics: Ukraine as a Mirror of the Political." I
believe a few words of clarification are in order.

As indicated in our conference publicity, the purpose of this conference
is to gather a diverse and distinguished group of scholars to think
about the implications of the current situation for the study of
politics. It is not to engage in event analysis.

We too are concerned about the role of so-called "experts"--including
those who neither have spent significant time in Ukraine nor can
communicate in the languages spoken on its territory--in this conflict
and analysis of it. We seek to elevate the conversation to think about
how this situation in all of its dimensions should cause us to rethink
theories of political change and methodologies of political analysis.
Our goal is emphatically not to produce opinion about the
particularities of the situation.

We look forward to welcoming NYC-based members of AAUS at the
conference. However, please understand that we will not entertain
questions regarding details of or policy surrounding the current
conflict. That is not the purpose of the gathering, nor, as Dr.
Chernetsky correctly points out, is it the area of expertise of many of
our distinguished conference participants. Instead, we hope that this
will be an occasion for sober reflection upon the complex relationships
between human events and our study of them.

Thank you.

З повагою,

Jessica Pisano

Dear Colleagues,

FYI an upcoming conference at the New School in NYC. Given that the conference is Ukraine-themed, but the majority of the announced speakers are not specialists on Ukraine, I very much hope some of you based in the greater NYC area could attend and provide feedback for the broader Ukrainian Studies community.

Best wishes,
Vitaly Chernetsky
