Ethnomusicologist/singer Maria Sonevytsky (Bard College) and ensemble
"Hilka" will perform the polyphonic village singing styles of Ukraine's
Chornobyl region. The Yara Arts Group will join the performance, as will the
Veveritse Brass Band. Special guests include Yevhen Yefremov (Kyiv,
Ukraine), Ihor Perevertniuk (Kyiv, Ukraine), Julian Kytasty, J.R. Hankins,
Brian Dolphin (Ukrainian Village Voices), Ethel Raim (Center for Traditional
Music and Dance), Eva Salina, Willa Roberts, Shelley Thomas, Cherrymae
Golston, Nadia Tarnawsky, and others.

Veveritse Brass Band plays dance music from or inspired by the Romani brass
bands of the Balkans. Their diverse musical backgrounds coupled with their
deep appreciation and study of Romani musical traditions have birthed
invigorating renditions of popular songs as well as their own experimental
compositions. In the end, it's a ten piece ensemble made of mostly brass
horns and 2 drummers and is known for causing a lot of awe, dancing and fun!

The featured Chornobyl songs are the about-to-be-released CD by Smithsonian
Folkways "Chornobyl Songs Project: Living Culture from a Lost World by
Ensemble Hilka." Read more about the release on the Smithsonian Folkways

The Chornobyl (the Ukrainian spelling) nuclear disaster of April 26, 1986,
forced hundreds of thousands of people, including those in the rural,
musically rich Kyivan Polissia region, to leave their homes and villages.
Separated from their homeland and cultural context, communities were broken
apart and centuries-old musical traditions were largely lost. The album
re-creates the all-but-vanished songs. Based on earlier field recordings of
songs that would be heard during the course of a typical year in a Polissian
village, the collection offers an invaluable re-imagination of a traditional
culture whose unique sonorous legacy lives on through the project.

This event is co-sponsored by The Ukrainian Museum
