POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH SCHOLAR POSITION IN UKRAINIAN STUDIES
2017-2018 FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION

The Harriman Institute, Columbia University, invites applications for 1 two-year postdoctoral research scholar position in Ukrainian Studies, extending over academic years 2017-18 and 2018-19. Postdoctoral research scholars are expected to concentrate on their own research and writing, which should be focused on some aspect of current Ukrainian life, politics, and/or international affairs; to teach a course of their own design in the spring semester of each of the two years; to give a public seminar/lecture on their research; and to be active participants in the Institute's scholarly community and events. The Institute provides desk space for all postdoctoral research scholars. The Institute also provides funds to sponsor workshops, conferences, and special events planned by fellows around their particular interests. This position is made possible by generous support of the Petro Jacyk Ukrainian Studies Fund.

The primary criterion in awarding this fellowship is academic excellence. The Fellowship Committee seeks evidence that the candidate's research, teaching, and publication will make a significant, original contribution to the study of contemporary Ukraine in their particular field of study. Eligibility is restricted to those who have received the Ph.D. between January 1, 2015, and June 30, 2017, and do not hold a tenure-track position.   All fellows must have successfully defended and deposited their dissertations prior to the commencement of the appointment. Successful applicants are expected to commit to the full two-year sequence.

The salary for 2017-2018 is $50,000. Medical benefits are provided and subsidized housing is available. There is a $1,000 research allowance per annum.

To apply, candidates should send the following materials to the Fellowship Committee, c/o Alla Rachkov (ar2052 at columbia.edu<mailto:ar2052 at columbia.edu>), in a single PDF file by January 15, 2017 (fellowships begin the following September):

Brief research plan outlining how the candidate's time will be spent at the Institute (2-3 pages).

Curriculum vitae.

Scholarly writing sample (one or two chapters of the dissertation, or a published article or book chapter related to the candidate's major research theme). The writing sample must be in English.

1-2 page preliminary syllabus or course concept (defining problem, method, expectations of students and brief selection of readings).

In addition, candidates must obtain two confidential letters of recommendation, submitted directly by each recommender to ar2052 at columbia.edu<mailto:ar2052 at columbia.edu> by January 15.

Decisions regarding the selection of postdoctoral scholars are made by mid-February, and applicants will be notified in a timely manner.
