Join us at 2 p.m. for "Ukrainian Culture and Identity after the Revolution
of Dignity," an illustrated talk by Dr. Yuri Shevchuk, lecturer of Ukrainian
language at Columbia University's Department of Slavic Languages and founder
of Ukrainian Film Club at Columbia University. Dr. Shevchuk has lectured on
the issues of the Ukrainian language, culture, identity and cinema at major
universities in the U.S. and Europe. His appearances in Ukrainian TV and
radio have provoked a lively public discussion.

Since the Kremlin occupied the Crimea and orchestrated a "civil war" in the
Donbas to cover its direct intervention in Ukraine, the attention of both
the world and the Ukrainian public opinion was exclusively on the military
and information aspects of the war. In his lecture, Yuri Shevchuk will
discuss the other, largely invisible and unrecognized war the Kremlin has
waged on Ukraine - the cultural war. The principal goal of the latter is to
undermine, weaken, and eliminate Ukrainian culture and language as the
principal pillars of Ukrainian identity. It is the strong sense of Ukrainian
distinctiveness that gives the lie to Putin's assertion that Russians and
Ukrainians are one people. This war has no distinct frontlines and no
immediately recognizable opponents. Yet it is its outcome that will
ultimately decide whether or not Ukraine will survive as a free,
independent, and democratic country. The Russian-Ukrainian cultural war has
its own actors, ideologies, logic, language, and outcomes that remain
largely unappreciated.
