Film The Living Fire (Zhyva vatra), 2014, Ukraine, documentary by Ostap Kostiuk. Ukr. w/Eng. subtitles, 77 min. An artistic portrayal of the life of Ukrainian shepherds in the Carpathian Mountains, and the fate of traditional crafts in a changing, modern world. Admission: $10.

Friday, May 13, 7 p.m. (screening again Sunday, June 5) – UMFF
Film Ivan the Powerful (Ivan Syla), 2013, Ukraine, feature film by Viktor Andriyenko. Ukr. w/Eng. subtitles, 89 min. Based on a true story, the film’s main character, Ivan Firtsak, was a Ukrainian circus performer, who was recognized as the strongest man on the planet. Ivan went through many trials with dignity, he steeled his heart and became an invincible giant of strength and spirit. Perfect film for families with children! Light reception after the screening. Admission is $15; $10 for members, seniors, students and children.

Saturday, May 14, 5 p.m. – UMFF
Film Our Hope (Nasha Nadiya), 2014, Ukraine, documentary by Volodymyr Tykhyy and Yuliya Shashkova. Ukr./Rus. w/Eng. subtitles, 45 min. Kidnapped by pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine and handed over to Russia, pilot Nadiya Savchenko was accused of having killed two Russian state-television journalists. She was charged and convicted, and subsequently sentenced to 22 years in prison. Admission: $10.

Short documentary program featuring three films from the “Encyclopedia of the Maidan” series directed by Serhiy Lysenko: Crimea SOS (Krym SOS), 2016, Ukraine, 19 min., Ukr./Rus. w/Eng. subtitles; Euromaidan SOS, 2016, Ukraine, 21 min., Ukr./Rus. w/Eng subtitles; Automaidan, 2016, Ukraine, 17 min., Rus./Ukr. w/Eng. subtitles. The protagonists are ordinary people who changed the reality in modern Ukraine. Admission: $10.

Film Haytarma, 2013, Ukraine, historical drama directed by Akhtem Seitablaiev. Crimean Tatar/Rus. w/Eng. subtitles, 90 min. Winner of several international awards, Haytarma is about the forced deportation of the Crimean Tatars by Soviet authorities in 1944. Based on a true story, Haytarma portrays Crimean Tatar test pilot Amet-khan Sultan’s efforts to protect his people. Introduction by Ayla Bakkalli, U.S. Representative of the Mejlis and U.S. member of the World Congress of Crimean Tatars. Light reception after the screening. Admission is $15; $10 for members and seniors; $5 for students.

Lecture “Jacques Hnizdovsky in Context” by Prof. Jaroslaw Leshko
Presented in conjunction with Presented in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition Jacques Hnizdovsky: Content and Style. Evolving Perspectives (on display through August 7, 2016), the lecture will be given by the exhibition's guest curator, Prof. Jaroslaw Leshko, arguably the foremost expert on Jacques Hnizdovsky and his art. Hnizdovsky ranks among that generation’s most distinguished and accomplished figures, and he designed the Museum’s logo for its debut in 1976.
Admission is $15; $10 for members and seniors; $5 for students. Light reception.

The year 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of the Ukrainian Museum, and an exhibition of the works of Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915-1985) is especially appropriate for the Museum's year-long celebration. Hnizdovsky embodies the ethos of post-World War II Ukrainian artists of the diaspora. He ranks among that generation's most distinguished and accomplished figures. And he designed the Museum's logo for its debut in 1976. Jacques Hnizdovsky: Content and Style. Evolving Perspectives is comprised of more than 100 works by Hnizdovsky, including oils, woodcuts, linocuts, ceramics, sculptures, drawings, and more.

Through June 5, 2016 (extended)
A comprehensive exhibition featuring the work of Zenowij Onyshkewych (b. 1929), a prolific Ukrainian American artist, whose oeuvre includes a wide range of mediums spanning sixty years of creative expression. This retrospective exhibition spanning his artistic career primarily showcases his landscapes, but also includes portraits and caricatures executed in oils, watercolors, and ink or pencil. The exhibition is comprised of more than 70 paintings and drawings. Onyshkewych studied with Reginald Marsh, one of the best known chroniclers of 1930s and 40s New York, and with the American Impressionist, Robert Philipp.
