The Ukrainian avant-garde—a relatively young field of investigation, collecting and study—is presently prime for new discoveries and analyses as the next generation of investigators, museum personnel, and art lovers is beginning to come into its own. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, a spate of exhibitions, both in the United States and abroad, have served to feature canonic works of Ukrainian modernism and of the avant-garde in particular. More recently, the quest for recognition of an independent Ukrainian culture bolstered by the Maidan revolution of 2014, has brought an urgency to art publishing in Ukraine. Exhibition catalogues and monographic studies have burst onto the scene. As a result, the relatively rare and mostly unnoticed artistic production emerging from Ukraine in the early part of the twentieth century is being made available to art lovers around the world. The Ukrainian Museum has played a significant role in promoting this information. Frequently
partnering with Rodovid Press of Kyiv to produce bilingual catalogues on Ukrainian modernism, the Museum has produced important and widely recognized resources of published materials to support the study of Ukrainian modernism. In 2016, the College Art Association recognized the Museum's exhibition catalogue Staging the Ukrainian Avant-Garde of the 1910s and 1920s with the Alfred H. Barr, Jr. Award for Smaller Museums, Libraries, Collections, and Exhibitions.

The Ukrainian Museum is sponsoring this event—the aim of which is to provide some perspective on the nature and state of art publishing in Ukraine—in conjunction with the 105th annual meeting of the College Art Association, New York, extending an open invitation to all of its participants and to the public at large.

Reception will follow the presentations.

CIM is an exhibition that plays on the notion of the collective, and what cultural and ethnic topographies bind first and second generation Ukrainian-American and Ukrainian born artists from the New York City area. The word "CIM" means "seven" in Ukrainian, and this exhibition convenes seven individual experiences as a collective of artists working in a wide range of styles and media. Carpathian Echoes: Traditional Textile Materials and Technologies in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania and Ukraine
Through March 12, 2017

The Ukrainian Museum is excited to present this unique cross-cultural exhibition in which traditional Romanian and Ukrainian textiles are displayed side by side for the aesthetic appreciation of museum visitors and to deepen scholarly understanding. Carpathian Echoes: Traditional Textile Materials and Technologies in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania and Ukraine comprises common textile materials and technologies that were characteristic of the Carpathian Mountains in both Romania and Ukraine during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The exhibition features several complete costumes, both women’s and men’s, as well as more than forty individual objects representative of the two neighboring cultures demonstrating the rich, colorful, and sophisticated textiles from the mountain region. It is the result of a fruitful collaboration between guest curator Dr. Florica Zaharia, Conservator in Charge, Department of Textile Conservation, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and
Lubow Wolynetz, Curator of Folk Art at The Ukrainian Museum.
