Book Talk. Ukrainian Bishop, American Church by Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak
Tuesday, March 5, 2019
4:10pm
1201 International Affairs Building (420 West 118th St, 12th floor)

Please join the Ukrainian Studies Program at the Harriman Institute,
Columbia University for a talk with by *Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak* about
her book *Ukrainian Bishop, American Church* (Catholic University of
American Press, 2018), on the topic of the consolidation of an independent
Ukrainian Catholic Church in America.

Join us to discuss a newly published book that explores the conflict-ridden
road to the establishment of the Archbishopric of the Ukrainian Catholic
Church in America, its quest for recognition by the Vatican and the
American Catholic Church, and especially its stormy relationship with the
Ukrainian society, which may be characterized as a conflict between the
church and state in the absence of both. The author, on the basis of rich
archival material, illustrates how Bohachevsky positioned the Church in
America to be able, half a century after his death, to provide meaningful
help to the Ukrainian Catholic Church as it emerged from the Soviet
catacombs to become the largest Eastern rite Catholic church in the world.

*Mark Andryczyk* of the Ukrainian Studies Program at the Harriman
Institute, Columbia University will lead the discussion, followed by
questions from participants. Copies of the book will be available for
purchase at the event.

*Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak*, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University
of Pennsylvania with a Ph.D. from Columbia University, is the author of
many seminal publications, and has a distinguished academic career. Dr.
Bohachevsky-Chomiak is attracted to understudied topics—Russian liberalism,
Ukrainian feminism, nationalism in Eastern Europe, and now the interaction
of immigrant communities with the Eastern Rite Catholic Church in the
United States. Dr. Bohachevsky-Chomiak also earned a Certificate from the
Russian Institute, Columbia University (now the Harriman Institute) as well
as an M.A. in 1961. She is looking forward to returning to campus for this
event.
